So, not surprisingly, the most ubiquitous brand name of them all, Virgin, wanted to flog you a car.
So why the handover? Virgin Cars was set up to import cars from the Continent, taking advantage of lower prices, and then sell them over the internet. It moved into phone sales before entering the highly competitive area of car supermarkets. Virgin will have a 25 per cent stake in the business, which will trade under the Virgin Cars brand. Branson will keep the option of taking his stake to 50 per cent, depending on how well the company trades in the future.
As Virgin reorganises itself the rest of the motor trade can now afford to feel a little smug, especially when Branson said modestly at the launch of this venture: "It is our intention to become the biggest car dealer in Britain.

Skip to main content. The automotive industry is ripe for disruption - and it has been for some time. We tried shaking things up in this sector in when we launched Virgin Cars. Back then, we identified a gap in the retail market and set about revolutionising the way that cars were being sold — creating our own online retail marketplace. Unfortunately that turned out to be the wrong angle, and we ended up shutting down the business just five years later.
At the time, we neglected to realise the biggest potential for disruption in the automotive industry. It had nothing to do with the process of selling cars, but rather with how cars were powered. Luckily, all was not lost from our venture. The experience with Virgin Cars taught us something that we have incorporated into our overarching vision ever since: In the modern world, there can be no profit without a well-defined purpose.
Since then, we have launched many successful purpose-driven ventures. Through partnerships with companies like LanzaTech, our team at Virgin Atlantic is tackling this problem by developing the next generation of sustainable, commercial jet fuel. The same spirit is fuelling our non-profit efforts.
Since we are supporting such important initiatives, it made a lot of sense for us to enter electric auto racing. We think that Formula E has the power to do for the electric car what Formula 1 did for the sports car — drive demand by making the vehicles cool.
By increasing the appeal of electric cars, the E Racing industry can power a more positive future. If you want to see the action up close, we have the perfect opportunity for you. Image from Virgin. Image from DS Virgin Racing. Our Companies. Quick Links.
